i guess somehow the universe always works things out. i got asked by some really good friends to do a poster for their theatre production, and of course i said i could.
but then, as usual with every flyer or poster gig, they came up and said the deadline was immediate ~ i always hate how that happens. i’m cool for doing things for friends and low pay when i can tinker with it on the side, but when it requires me to drop everything to get it done out of responsibility and there is little fiscal payout ( i know the exposure and karma of it is always a good thing…) i realize i just can’t do it any more. i felt bad, since i think this was the first job i’ve ever had to turn down, but it just wasn’t in the cards.
and then the next day i get an email from someone to commission me for a portrait! someone’s watching. i guess i made the right move. she has the perfect beauty mark. made for Rubenesque portraiture. So this thing i can work on while i still try to figure out this Solo show thing….

some more sketches: a few from an older one that i sold and never put up (i spilled a coffee in my bag all over it: see if you can spot it!!)
there’s always an option to render these things more, but for me, they’re just little jots to get a thought out, the painting being where more time is spent. that’s all i need. sometimes i want to really go in there and flesh out the drawings, but then there would be no point for a painting maybe? i dunno.

i am officially a lightweight now. last night one hit did me in like nothin i’ve ever felt before. i did manage to scratch out some doodles before it hit me, but man: wow. i guess, upon looking at these this morning: maybe some sort of horse cavalry sketch??? and….demonic, age afflicted cherubs again. they just keep poppin up.

with all the advancements in technology and moleskine still can’t even make an opening page to their sketchbook that gets rid of that stupid glued-up half inch gutter. what the fuck moleskine. i just don’t understand it…i hadn’t had a sketchbook since december, so i bought one today. and, with all the options of any sort of vision to put down, i wanted to draw the thrilling motif of a guy resting on a stick. i actually think it could make a good painting: ‘resting on his laurels’ or something to that end…

i never posted this as a final painting, but i stopped into Corey Daniels Gallery in Wells, ME today to drop off some stuff and got a good photo of it. i want to take it back and do some more painting on it eventually, but in the meantime i am quite fond of it. just knowing personally how many goddamn layers there are that i scuffed out haha
‘mutiny’ 36 x something?
oil on canvas, 2011
available @ Corey Daniels Gallery

i got a copy of my book today! i’d say overall it got printed pretty well, but man some of those gutter/bleed/trim lines look filthy. i think i need to clean it up a bit. i wish Blurb allowed a test print, but oh well i’m trying to figure this all out realtime! so, i think i may end up ordering another copy and seeing if it’s any better. i wish i knew what i was doing
